Hiking with your dog is a great way to explore New Zealand’s trails, beaches and back country together. A little preparation and the right gear can make the experience safer and more comfortable for both of you.
A well-fitting dog harness is a good starting point, giving you better control while allowing your dog to move freely. Pair it with a strong, reliable lead, or a hands-free lead if you prefer to keep your hands free on the trail.
For longer walks, consider a dog backpack or carrier, particularly for smaller dogs or those that may tire before you do. In cooler or wetter conditions, a lightweight dog jacket can help keep your dog warm and dry, while a cooling vest can be useful during warmer adventures.
Don’t forget the basics either. Carry plenty of fresh water, a collapsible bowl, treats, waste bags and a small first-aid kit. If you’re heading somewhere remote, it’s also worth checking track conditions and making sure dogs are permitted before setting off.
